This film featured six highly-experienced climbers tackling peaks in a stunningly beautiful and dreadfully remote area of the world, just miles from the South Pole. The final film, “Queen Maud Land,” was a vision of icy landscapes and craggy rock formations at the bottom of the world, in Antarctica. “And whether will be seen as a recreational pursuit or a sport.” “It will be interesting to see how impacts climbing,” said Metrorick general manager Yosca. The film names Russia as the birthplace of speed climbing, but follows how athletes and climbers from all over the world are adjusting to the sport, and getting ready to hopefully qualify for the Olympics. Speed climbers ascend the same route every time, which was, ironically, thrown together on second thought by the famous route designer Jacky Godoffe. Speed climbing is vastly different from typical climbing. The third film, “Up to Speed,” features an important development in the world of Olympic sports: the addition of lead climbing, boulder climbing and, most notably, speed climbing as a new category. “For example, how climbing can range from scaling hundreds of feet to only a dozen feet off the ground.” “The tour shows off the diversity of people in climbing,” Yosca said. Themes of friendship, cross-cultural communication, and adventure make this a warm and feel-good film. He is known for his intense visualization exercises before climbing a route.Ĭlimbers Eliad Nissan and Elad Omer travel to “The Valley of the Moon” in the second film to work with Bedouin guide Mohammad Hussein to establish a climbing route on one of the incredible structures in the valley. Ondra, who says he has been obsessed with climbing since the age of 2, has made records with his climbs and is popularly considered the best climber of his generation. The first film, “Age of Ondra,” was punctuated with shrieks of laughter as the crowd witnessed some of legendary climber Adam Ondra’s more unusual methods. “This is such a great way to bring the community together and get psyched about last year’s feats,” he said. Mike Morin was there representing The Access Fund, an organization that keeps climbing areas open and conserved across the country, and a long-time REEL ROCK partner and sponsor. The raffle included items from most of REEL ROCK's sponsors: The North Face, Black Diamond, Yeti, Climbing Magazine, The Access Fund, and American Alpine Club. The night also included a raffle benefiting Urban Peaks, a non-profit organization that brings climbing programming to New England youth to build character and self-esteem. “Climbing is a growing sport, and Reel Rock brings the world of climbing to you in 3-4 short films.” “It’s been an amazing year for climbing films it’s great to see them as mainstream features,” he said. ![]() Matt Yosca, general manager of Metrorock Climbing, the local event sponsor, hosted the event. “I live vicariously through people who are more adventurous than me.” “I’ve been to the last 2-3 Reel Rocks, and it is just high quality fun,” he said. Joe Jonas, a Bose engineer by day and avid climber by night, came from Maynard to enjoy the event. This year, the film festival includes four films. As veteran climbers watched in amusement, young kids ran around the lower level to find seats as chaperones tried to guide them upstairs.Įveryone was there to get inspired by REEL ROCK 13, a film festival that brings climbing films across the country to educate and encourage climbers of any level. The Somerville Theatre was completely packed on Wednesday night, Nov.
